Gâteau aux Noix (French Walnut Cake)

I drove my boyfriend to another city this past weekend so he could take his math subject GRE. I wanted to make it a special trip, so I hunted around for a simple, elegant, no-fuss cake to pack up and bring along. My friend sent me this recipe from Orangette's blog: Gâteau aux Noix, or French Walnut Cake.

This cake has a subtle flavor of white wine, and the toasted walnuts are absolutely delicious. If you're looking for a simple, quick cake to grab a hunk of after dinner, this is the perfect choice.

easy potluck recipe

Hi Everyone

So my sorority is having a potluck supper this Sunday. I need to bring a dish and really don't just want to bring a bagged salad or something really boring, it would be nice to bring real food. I have about 2 hours during the day to prepare whatever I making. If it can be prepared the day before and just cooked that day in those 2 hours that would work too. I'm looking low cost. There will be about 35 people there, but not everyone will eat every dish. Also I do have to transport the dish and we do have a ceremony beforehand something that would taste good and not have to be really hot would be ideal. I'd like to make some sort of warm dish, but cold recipes are definately good as well. I'll be getting there at around 5:30, we won't be eating until about 6:30, but the food can stay covered until then to keep somewhat warm.

Thanks in advance for any recipes you think would work for this occasion!!

The woman who stares at hot dogs

I have four pounds of conventional American hot dogs that I need to use before they go off. I don't like hot dogs very much just as hot dogs, though I can take them once in a while. I hate throwing away food, especially when I paid for it. Baking them in biscuit dough will get rid of six or eight of them, but I badly need a few ideas for making the rest of them interestingly edible.

I've already Googled around for a while and mostly came up with recipes involving cutting up the dogs and heating them with canned beans. Or baking them into "corn dog muffins". I want to go a little more exotic and less middle of the road than that, to put it mildly. I have a big pantry full of Asian, Mexican and Italian ingredients and seasonings along with all the American staples, and spicy-hot is no obstacle. Has anyone tried treating hot dogs the way they might treat, say, Chinese sausages or chorizo? Were the results acceptable/horrifying/surprisingly good? Kickstart my imagination, please. :)

Edit: Thanks very much for the nice assortment of ideas! I figured this group could easily kill off those dogs with its combined brain power. :)

can the stems of fennel be used in veggie stock?

I am currently making potato soup with fennel, leeks and shallots.  I am using the darker part of the leeks for a veggie stock and was wondering if I could use the stems of the fennel in the stock as well?  it smells the same as the bulb, but i'm not sure if it tastes different.  help????

My apologies for what's probably another stupid question...

I found a recipe for clam sauce I'd like to make here. At present I have minced, not chopped clams...

My question is, since I assume the canned clams are uncooked (alliteration ftw!), how do I know when they are cooked?

I've made clam chowder with them before, but since my recipe for that has the chowder simmering for an hour I never really thought about it.

Is it like shrimp, where they will change color? Or will I just have to guess?

Thanks =).

Good Morning everyone, I could use some direction!

Comment & Question

91X Wrex the Halls Tickets
San Diego, Ca.
Hope this is okay to ask here, but does anyone have a General Admission ticket for this event that they'd like to sell? My best friend was a little late on getting hers & while I have a floor access ticket, she didn't get one in time. =/

Side note;
Just got back from listening to the entire "This is War" album. It is amazing. No words could describe the wonderful things I've heard. My favorite is "Night of the Hunter" but there isn't really any track I'd "skip". I love all of it. And a cool fact from the Q & A, Shannon wrote and played guitar on "L490". Amazing right? I agree. ♥

Savory Cinnamon (Breakfast) Recipes

My friend and I do a monthly booze dinner, which is basically like an Iron Chef night where the secret ingredient is a type of alcohol. Every part of the menu either includes the ingredient or complements it. Previous nights have included basil vodka, chai liqueur, red wine, pumpkin beer, and tequila.

Well, this month is cinnamon. I'm making some more cinnamon vodka, and we'll probably supplement that with cinnamon schnapps or liqueur. What's more, this is going to be a brinner (breakfast + dinner) sleepover for some friends. We're going to cook and watch cartoons all night.

Part of our menu is obvious, as cinnamon french toast and cinnamon rolls are tops. We'll probably also make some cinnamon bacon, though I am not sure that I can stomach bacon for a while after this weekend's bacon party (and bacon explosion). But what I am looking for are savory cinnamon recipes.

Can anyone suggest savory cinnamon dishes. Hopefully they will be breakfast appropriate, but if not I will find a way to adapt. If they are vegetarian, so much the better, but if not some people just won't eat it.

Lunch Today: Homemade Tomato Soup and Roasted Garlic Hummus

This tomato soup is my new obsession, and my roommates and I have been guzzling the stuff like it's the elixir of life. I'm pretty sure that it sharpens the mind, improves the senses, and regulates your digestive system. At the very least it's wonderfully comforting on a cold rainy night. The hummus is a little fancier than the simple version I normally make, really great for garlic lovers.

Pain Perdu

Does anyone have a tried and true recipe for a really custardy pain perdu? I had a craving for it last night & made some baked french toast, but it didn't come out right. The leftovers are rock hard & I have them soaking in milk.
I usually think of french toast as something really yummy when it's hot, but that I choke on when it starts to cool & get tough. Is thicker bread the secret?

PHILIP BUTLER
TRAPPED AT SEA
Sawmill / Steelmill

I know nothing of folk music apart from the simple fact I recoil from the twee worldview I associate with anything reared from Steeleye/Fairport sap, but Butler is like a descendant of the darker moods evoked by John Martyn or Michael Chapman. And, why we’re contemplating this, he’s got ‘There's ghosts in the coaching house........’ written on his myspace page, and announces new song ‘Jack The Moment’ (or ‘Jack The Mommet’ according to the myspace player) as concerning, “a supernatural scarecrow that abducts young girls and transforms them into his straw brides,” which is definitely a direction we want to see him going in, tapping into a fertile territory. I figured I’d tip you off about this because it was released earlier this year and it’s a limited edition of only 100.

Traffic ticket: go to court, or no?

I recently got a ticket in Orleans Parish for going through a stop sign. It's my first traffic ticket in Orleans Parish. Every other city/state I've lived in, when I got tickets I either went to court and won my case easily, or there was an option (California) to sit through "traffic school" for an evening and get the ticket wiped from my record.

From what I understand (from friends and from calling the city today and asking), my options here are:
1) Go to traffic court and represent myself. But if I don't win, I pay not only the amount of the ticket ($180) but also "court costs" plus, of course, the violation stays on my driving record. Other possible outcomes are that I win and it all goes away, or I can get the fine reduced. My girlfriend told me she cried in front of the traffic judge once and they took pity on her.

2) Hire a lawyer (can do this for $200 through a friend of a friend) to represent me in traffic court. But possibly the lawyer won't win either or they will only get the fine reduced and then I still pay everything plus the lawyer, too.

3) Just pay and suck it up.

Of course, the cost of everything is a concern. I am most concerned about my car insurance premiums going up because of a ticket on my record. My job is super busy right now, and actually this week is particularly busy and doesn't leave me a lot of time to sit around waiting to talk to the traffic judge in the court house. However, I think I could call or go to court and reschedule the court date?

What are people's experiences? What do you advise? Have you been successful in going to traffic court yourself and winning (best case scenario)? What about this hiring a layer thing, which I've never even heard of anyone I know doing for a traffic ticket before I moved to New Orleans.

I imagine I will get many different perspectives, but I am interested in hearing people's input because, well, how do I put this... the municipal and legal system in Louisiana works very differently than any other state I've ever lived in, and I'm a little concerned about proceeding without as much information as I can get.

Thanks.

More Spammage of my Journal

So yesterday was my last dose of avelox and yet I still have the cough
of a healthy weevil ready to take a evening stroll through the sewers of
Cardiff :P

I got tired at lunchtime of coughing and expecting to see my lungs on
the floor or desk and so I went to the drug store and came out with
liquid death. I mean seriously, I'm expecting to see wallpaper come off
if this was ever smeared on the wall. Buckley's DM Decongestant...
eeeck!

It swears it will give you fast acting relief from dry hacking cough and
nasal/sinus congestion. I still have that cough and I cough long enough
that I swear my sinuses are going to drown me from the pressure. So I
figure AHA this will work.

I'll tell you why they claim fast acting relief ... cause within moments
of taking it ... you start wanting to rip off your nose and pull out
your lungs and sinuses.

Nothing should be swallowed from a combination of Ammonium Carbonate,
Camphor, Canada Balsam, Pine Needle Oil and Menthol, it's just wrong and
against nature.

Buckley's .. it tastes nasty and smells even worse. I know because I can
smell now ROFLMAO!!!!

Broth Update

First of all thanks to everyone who gave me tips on my Broth project. Here's what I ended up doing:

5 Carrots
5 Stalks of Celery
2 Small Onions
3 Cloves of Garlic
Fresh Herbs
3 tbsp Dried Porcini (approx)
1 litre Water
1 cup mushroom stalks
3-4 tsps salt
Pepper to taste
Worcestershire Sauce
Light Soy Sauce
1 Cup White Wine

Cut into chunks and roasted with a bit of olive oil and a touch of salt for 30 minutes. Deglazed the pan with about a cup of white wine (actually last years Primrose Wine cause I didn't have anything else in the house). Put the whole thing in a medium sized pot and added no more than a litre of water (I basically topped the pot up and can't remember how much it holds exactly). At this point I added about 1 cup of mushroom stalks and a small handful of dried porcini as well as a handful of fresh herbs from the garden (right now that's thyme, oregano, summer savory, sage and bay laurel). Seasoned with about 3 tsps of salt and some dried marjoram. Gently simmered for 45 minutes. Strained and added some Worcestershire Sauce and Soy Sauce to taste.

It turned out to be a very nice stock, not quite ready for the big time of being served as a soup.

What I wish I had done different or had on hand: I wish I had chopped the veggies more finely, I'm too used to my 6 hour chicken stock and need to take into account the shorter cooking time. I did not have tomato puree, if I had had some on hand would have added it to the roasting veggies. I did not have Parsley, would have added the Parsley stalks to the pot and at the end added some chopped parsley to the finished product. I wish I had soaked the dried Porcini mushrooms, they were an impulse addition and I did not take into account the short cooking time of veggie broth so I don't think I got all the flavor out of them that I could.

I ended up using the stock in some bread stuffing as well as a mushroom sauce that along with some spiced red cabbage and sprouts made up our dinner last night. I think the stock added a lot to the flavor of especially the stuffing and I will definitely continue refining my recipe and experimenting with different options. I suspect that we will start making a pot of veggie stock that will vary seasonally every weekend and keep it in the fridge to use throughout the week instead of using the (very excellent) Marigold Stock Powder. Thanks again to everyone who commented on my original post.

"J. Bradley is the Veruca Salt of the literary chocolate factory, writing with a satirical brazenness that leaves cavities among the readers eyes. There is a sugary darkness to his work and a lackadaisical charm; that of a black-market dental hygienist. J. delivers new audacity, important romance, and certainty. He acknowledges the sensational ugly without apprehension. His ideas are of an entirely different species and his wit knocks at postmodern... stunned today, laughing tomorrow. Dodging Traffic is the classic, the sequel will forever envy." - Sarah Morgan, author of Animal Ballistics

She got from her mama a new fuzzy coat to wear while her belly hair grows back (pink and white checked) two new big skinnez (a rabbit and a squirrel I think) to drag around the house and make squeak, a vest that is too small alas :( and a purple and pink collar that has argyle on it mixed with a skull every few checks.
